Atletico de Madrid debuts in League play by visiting Santiago Bernabéu

The National League Championship is getting underway and Atlético de Madrid will do so with a visit to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. A derby to make things interesting right away in a season in which Javier Aguirre’s team has placed lots of hopes. These two teams have faced each other at Santiago Bernabeu in League matches 70 times, with a balance of 47 victories for the home side, 12 for Atleti and 11 draws. In all of these matches Real Madrid has scored 140 goals, to 83 for Atletico de Madrid. Last season, Javier Aguirre’s side came away with a draw at 1-all in their visit to the Bernabeu. Mista put the visitors ahead but minutes later, Raúl levelled, and the match remained scoreless the rest of the way.
