Atletico de Madrid visits the complicated Mestalla Stadium

Javier Aguirre’s squad will visit the always complicated Mestalla Stadium in week 21 of the Leageue Championship to take on a Valencia squad that is a firm candidate to bring home the League title. This Spanish football classic has been contested on 67 occasions, with 35 victories for Valencia, 14 draws and 18 victories for Atletico. These teams have faced each other only once in the Second Division (1930/1931 season), when Valencia defeated the team from Madrid by a score of 4-3. Valencia has scored 122 goals in these confrontations, while Atletico has put in 72. In the past two seasons Atleti has tied one-all in both matches, and their last triumph in Mestalla was in the 2002/2003 season, when they won by the minimum thanks to a goal by Aguilera. It should be noted that in the second week of this season, Quique Sánchez Flores’ squad won 0-1 in Vicente Calderón Stadium on a goal scored by David Villa.
